New Rules for Unrated Players

This past Annual General Meeting (AGM) of NAGVA, members approved a new rule that affects teams with rosters containing non-rated or unrated players. It was approved when a player is found to be playing in a division lower than their official rating, the team will be assessed a penalty in the form of a lost set on day 1 (Saturday), and on day 2 (Sunday), a lost match. The penalty will be assessed as soon as it is confirmed that the player has two skills above the division in which they are playing. For day 1 (Saturday), if two teams are found to have players rated above their division they are in during the same set, each team will be assessed a penalty, splitting the two sets [25-0 (if starting at 0) or 25-4 (if starting at 4-4)]. On day 2 (Sunday), as soon as a player is confirmed that a player is rated above the division they are playing in, the team will be notified that they automatically will lose the entire match.

This is a friendly reminder that all ratings are not final until the end of the play on day 2 (Sunday), for day 1 (Saturday) it’s important that your players are playing to the best of their abilities. For the penalty of having a player rated in a higher division is of minimal impact to the team. On day 2 (Sunday) this is a reminder that if a player is found to be playing below the division of their confirmed rating, the team will be penalized by losing the match, and if you are still in the winner’s bracket this will put you in the losers bracket, and if you are in the losers bracket, this will automatically end your teams running in the tournament.

Referees

R1s (up referees) will be provided on Sunday, but teams will still need to provide a NAGVA certified referee and scorekeeper for Saturday and Sunday. If you are in need of someone to fulfill this duty please notify the tournament director ahead of the tournament so we can make arrangements. There is a cost associated per match if you don’t have someone certified for either role. To learn more about the R1 and scorekeeper NAGVA rules click here.

Awards

We will be presenting All-Star, MVP, and Defensive Diva awards at the conclusion of bracket play for each respective division at the command center. The most prestigious award, The Triple Tiara award, will be awarded at the end of the last tournament in which a team would qualify.  The award will be presented to the team as soon as it can be determined.
